Home workouts can be just as effective as going to the community gym. In considering a home gym,you want to have as a complete a workout session as you would in the community gym. What equipment does this take? You will need something for cardiovascular exercise. And, you will need equipment for weight and strength training.

You can purchase any equipment you need for your home gym, used. Check out the want ads in local papers. Check the Craiglist on your computer. There is also used sporting goods stores. Using these ideas, will save a considerable amount of money. Most times the equipment is in good shape. If the person was using it, they would not be selling it. You can get some phenomenal deals from people moving to a new location. They do not want to disassemble and reassemble the equipment, or don not want to haul the extra weight.

For cardio, equipment can be as simple as a good running shoe. You can walk, jog, or run for a cardio workout. But if it is too hot, too cold, too wet, or you are not an outdoors person, you will need a couple items for cardio indoors. Pick up an elliptical machine, a treadmill, or an exercise bike, to get that heart beating and blood flowing. An inexpensive, effective addition to cardio equipment is portable step stack. it has 3 or 4 adjustable heights an the step takes up no space, as it is very light and portable. You can alternate between the steps and whatever else you decide to add to your cardio equipment.

Now, there is the question of,what do I need for weight and strength training? If you have money to spare, spend a few grand to purchase a state of the art expensive, massive, good-looking, multi-station weight bearing exercise unit. They will even assemble it for you, for a fee. But if you are like most of us, you will build and add to your home gym as you go along. You need to start with a good sturdy bench. It really should have a lat attachment and a leg extension attachment. You will need some plates to put on the attachments. To start with, Do you need a 400 pound Olympic barbell set, or would some dumbbells be sufficient? At home, you probably will not have a spotter for heavy bench presses or squats. So, maybe some dumbbells to start, will suffice. There are solid dumbbells or adjustable ones. You can a solid workout with dumbbells, comparable to any workout in the community gym. If you are not familiar with dumbbell workouts, check out the internet or get books or magazines on the subject.

Remember, you are not surrounded with other people in your home gym. Do not push your limits too far. This could be dangerous, with no one to help you. You can have an excellent workout using slower, properly performed, repetitions of an exercise. You can do a few more repetitions. You can do these to exhaustion, just like in the community gym. You will get pumped up just as well. Feel yourself out. do what works best for you. Pump that iron to a personal satisfaction. Be careful. And do not forget your cardio.
